Prof Nigel Crook

I am Professor in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Founding Director of the Institute for Ethical AI, and Associate Dean Research and Knowledge Exchange at Oxford Brookes University. I am also the Scientist in Residence at Wycliffe Hall, University of Oxford.

I graduated from Lancaster University with a BSc (hons) in Computing and Philosophy in 1982 and successfully defended my PhD thesis entitled “The Theory of Explanation Applied to Medical Expert Systems’ at Oxford Brookes University in 1991. I have nearly four decades of experience as a lecturer and a researcher in Artificial Intelligence, which includes medical diagnostic systems, machine learning, computational neuroscience and moral machines.

I an expert reviewer for the European Commission and serve on several scientific committees for international conferences. My research interests include biologically inspired machine learning and social robotics. My most recent work is in autonomous moral robots where I am exploring how it might be possible to equip robots with a degree of moral competence. My work in robotics has attracted some media attention, including 16 appearances on regional, national and international television channels.
